Riding the Whirlwind

June – this is June? Glad I noticed before it was gone! 😉

The back pasture has ‘matured’ enough for grazing. Every critter agrees!

Audrey has left her chicks to fend for themselves. This shot was taken a few days before she took her leave. Like the four legged chicken shot? 😉 She has returned to the flerd … and her ‘Oddballs’ have stayed in their coop and run space. They still have more growing to do before they’ll join her with the big Orpingtons.

We had a wonderful few days with my sister and her grandkids. They loved being surrogate mothers for the chicks … and

… the ducklings! These little ones joined us the first day of June. I am loving their water antics! While my Great-Niece Sophia was here she spent lots of time scooping them up and teaching them to walk up the ramp in and out of their coop. They have grown very quickly and graduated to a ‘big pool’ now. More pictures are sure to follow. 😉

Dottie and Lucas had a good time hanging out.

Rosie and Bella soaked up some extra loving.

Sophia not only took to the ducklings … she also befriended Agatha.

We’ve been living in a bit of a whirlwind for a few weeks – today was a quiet one. They say time flies when you’re having fun. Kids and critters – a great recipe for good days.

They were an important distraction … we are enduring an incredible onslaught of gypsy moth caterpillars. They have stripped the oaks, basswood and ironwood trees of their entire spring growth. The ground and roof tops are covered with their poop and the remains of chewed up leaves. Every day sounds like a rainy day … a constant tap tap tapping … as these fall. We are holding our breath … waiting for their cycle to be done. And we are already planning for ways to mitigate their impact next spring … hoping there are trees to be saved by then!

There are still other trees that seem to be surviving … so I keep looking their way!

Hope you are enjoying June in your neck of the woods.

Hugs from the Meadow Mice!
