Life’s a Beach

I’ve been noticing this spring that the jennies’ hooves were growing long toes. Our farrier gives them good trims every 8 weeks or so. But the gravel in the paddocks was proving too much to allow their frogs (donkey term for heels) to grow at the same pace as their hoof walls. So we contacted our local ‘Go-To’ hauler to bring on the sand. Even laid as thick as it is today the donkeys had a great time playing tag through the ‘sand drifts’. On Wednesday we’ll have the tractor here to spread it out and smooth it down. Looks like they’ll be ‘beach donkeys’ this spring!

  1. You know, that is kind of odd, the gravel should be really good for thier hooves. The frogs do shed this time of year then generally toughen up as the summer months progress. The sand will be good as well and I would be very interested to see how their hooves change with the sand. Nutrition plays a huge part too. If you would like some help in creating a balanced ration, let me know, I would be glad to help.
