Fall has always been my favourite time of year. Now that I’m retired I have an ever better appreciation of its beauty. I love the smells of a fall evening – earthy – best taken in big long deep breaths.
I love the stillness. The flocks of Grackles and Red-Winged Blackbirds have started on their journeys south. That leaves the woods to the quieter Chickadees, Nuthatches and Finches.
It is quiet until … Bella decides she wants company. Today she let out two different wailing croaks!
I’m sure her big eared buddies must have had to flatten their ears to protect their ear drums! Each time I checked she (Bella) had decided to head to the back paddock on her own – likely for some shade. If the others didn’t come along quickly enough – #$%$%$!
The flies are still a big part of Bella’s angst. Although, this afternoon I managed to get a good slathering of Watkins bug repellent cream on all four donkey’s fetlocks (ankles). It doesn’t keep the flies off of every inch of their legs – but it sure does cut down on the swarms that are there otherwise. Those are Rosie’s legs above. She sure is a beauty.
Hope you had the chance to catch a bit of the freshness of the day your way.
Hugs from the Meadow Mice!
