OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMeet Jack … he is a spring resident here at the Meadow.
Green All Over12Jack and his family arrived here courtesy of my mother more than ten years ago.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJack-in-the-pulpits resemble a preacher standing in … well … a pulpit!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe eagerly watch for them to sprout in our woodland gardens each May.
Green All Over11The ‘leaf’ that overhangs the ‘Jack’ like a hood is called a ‘spathe’. It keeps the pollen on the tiny flowers at the base of the flower spike (or spadix) from being washed away by rain. Later on in the summer the female plants produce bright red berries. But for now … they’re all about the pulpit!
