What a Difference a Day Makes

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHurray! Spring showed up today! And I think she is going to stay for a while this time. Notice the picnic table circled above? It isn’t even in a snow bank … just sitting on the back lawn under the melting snow. The top showed up yesterday afternoon.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThat’s this table! Needless to say – it is not quite yet time to take Rosie for a walk on the lawns! Even though it looks like a lot of snow – still – it is less – less than yesterday! What a relief to start to see the gravel showing up in the paddock again.
Spring Snow02As I was walking out this evening I noticed this amazing sight on the hill! Seems Paco found the rock ledges are showing up after today’s melt as well. So great to see them all up there checking out what nibblies are being uncovered.
Spring Snow01The hillside is new to Bella. She arrived in mid-winter. So it will be like her home has magically developed a whole new wing! Tonight she was more comfortable sticking to the hillside trail and kept an eye on the others through the fence line.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe ‘lake’ by the Bully Barn door has gone down considerably today. I don’t know if you can see how THICK that ice is – even after a good day’s melt. I have never cut so much ice with an axe before! I thought when I left it that I’d get back at it this morning and try to mash up the ice bank so this week’s melt could wipe it out. My arms and shoulders had a different opinion when I got up!! We spent a good chunk of the afternoon digging gullies in other spots for temporary streams in order to drain the paddock of the melt. Last year’s work with raising the paddock with gravel and slanting it all to the east is paying off.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe also had a chance to try out ‘Stall #2’ … the Condo ‘gate’. It sure meant for a peaceful breakfast. Darby was able to relax her concern about just what the other girls were eating.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA… while I worked with Paco on handling his hooves – front and back.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADarby did do a little problem solving … to see if there was some way she could get out to help Bella finish off her carrots …
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERARosie – who is quite good at popping latches – wasn’t able to get Darby out either. Which meant Paco lessons continued without interuption – everyone got their own carrot bowl – all without any fuss.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’m loving all of this daylight. It seems that as soon as I finish breakfast I’m keen to get outside – and stay out until lunch. Ede and I got chuckling over realizing we couldn’t remember what we wore when it was this warm. It was actually 20’C in the sunshine out there this afternoon. Bliss! Hope you got a whiff on spring in your neck of the woods too!
